Dear UC Advocates,
I wish to offer my heartfelt appreciation for your support of a veto request on Senate Bill 959 (Lara), the measure that sought to place additional and costly requirements on the University when it contracts out for services.
Thanks to UC advocates like you, Governor Brown recently vetoed this legislation which, if signed into law, would have imposed significant unplanned strain on the University’s operating budget. Meeting our public service obligations to the state in a cost-effective manner is an important priority for the University; however, this legislation would have set back those efforts considerably by placing an undue burden and cost on our campuses and medical centers, as well as the service vendors with which we do business.
We are thankful that after weeks of thoughtful consideration, the Governor heard your concerns and vetoed the measure. This was the University’s top legislative priority for 2016 and we would not have been successful without your support and many others like you throughout California.
I am honored to lead the University of California and am humbled by the strong support we receive, as evidenced by your response to our call-to-action.
Again, thank you for your continued support of UC.
Yours very truly,
