Help Ensure Families Can Save for Their Children with Disabilities

Tell Congress to expand and strengthen ABLE savings accounts for individuals with disabilities by approving the ABLE Age Adjustment Act (H.R. 1874/ S. 817).

A new effort is underway in Congress to expand and strengthen ABLE accounts, the savings tool Congress created in 2014 to help families save for the future needs of their children with disabilities.

At the time, Congress limited this important savings tool to only individuals who acquired their disability before turning age 26. Bipartisan legislation in the U.S. Senate (S. 817) and U.S. House of Representatives (H.R. 1874) would increase the age restriction to ensure that more individuals with disabilities are eligible to set money aside for housing, employment training, personal support services, or other services to help improve their health and independence.

The ABLE Age Adjustment Act would also strengthen the sustainability of the current ABLE account program, according to the National Association of State Treasurers.

Tell Congress to approve the ABLE Age Adjustment Act.

I am writing to ask that you cosponsor and approve the ABLE Age Adjustment Act (H.R. 1874), legislation that would expand and strengthen an important savings tools (ABLE accounts) that help families save for the service needs of children with disabilities.

In 2014, Congress approved the Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act (P.L. 113-29) that created tax-advantaged ABLE savings accounts for services and supports to help children with disabilities maintain their health, independence, and quality of life. At the time, Congress limited the savings tool to only individuals who acquired their disability before turning age 26. H.R. 1874 would increase the age restriction to ensure that more individuals with disabilities are eligible to set money aside for housing, employment training, personal support services, or other supports to help improve their health and independence.

Not only is it the right thing to do, it is also an essential step toward strengthening the current ABLE account programs. The state officials who manage ABLE programs (National Association of State Treasurers) reported that passage of the ABLE Age Adjustment Act is critical to achieving sustainability for ABLE programs.

Please help strengthen and expand ABLE accounts by supporting the bipartisan ABLE Age Adjustment Act.
