Take Action MISSISSIPPI: CALLS NEEDED TODAY -- defund Common Core!

March 6, 2014

The Mississippi State Senate is currently working on the education budget for the year. Tuesday night, conservatives in the Mississippi State Senate took a final stand to defund Common Core in the Mississippi State Legislature when Senator Angela Hill offered an amendment to strike funding in the budget (HB 1476) for Common Core. The amendment failed, but there is still hope of defunding the initiative on the floor.

The bill now moves to the floor of the Senate for discussion, and a vote will occur soon. We must support the effort by these Senators to defund this top-down federal approach to education, and your calls and emails are critical. Please immediately email and call your Senator AND the Lieutenant Governor and ask them to DEFUND COMMON CORE in the education budget.

The only senators voting to support defunding last night were: Phillip Gandy, Angela Hill, Chris McDaniel, and Melanie Sojourner. Please make sure that they know you support their efforts.

TAKE ACTION!

Call and email your Senator’s office and the Lieutenant Governor and tell them to DEFUND COMMON CORE by repealing Line 82 of the education budget. THEN, pass this along to your friends and family!

Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves: (601) 359-3200, ltgov@senate.ms.gov

We are writing to urge you to defund Common Core in the education budget by repealing Line 82.
The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a big-government, top-down approach to education, and it is not good for students or the future of Mississippi. With costs expected to rise well above $100 million for states, Mississippi taxpayers cannot afford the Common Core!
The Common Core Standards are of poor quality and will fail to prepare our students for studies in science, technology, engineering, and math. By eighth grade, the standards put our students two years behind their peers in high-performing countries and even further behind in high school.
In English and language arts, the Common Core severely de-emphasizes the study of classic literature and instead implements drab and simplistic “informational” texts. We know that critical thinking is the key to success, and the evidence shows that children should be reading more, not less, classic literature.
Prominent child psychiatrists and psychologists have heavily criticized the Standards as being age-inappropriate for young children.
We know that Mississippians cannot depend on the federal government to look out for the best interests of our children, so please act on behalf of our state by withdrawing from the Common Core, reclaiming state sovereignty, and returning power to Mississippians!
