Action Alert
Take Action MISSISSIPPI: Common Core - Urgent: Need Calls & Emails NOW!

February 3, 2014

Update: We were expecting an anti-common core bill in the Mississippi House of Representatives last week, but the pro-Common Core establishment prevented the bill from being filed. Fortunately, our pro-liberty ally State Senator Angela Hill has filed three bills in the Senate that will help restore power and local control of education. But, the bills must be passed through the Senate Education Committee by TOMORROW, February 4th.

Key leaders need to hear your concerns, so please take action below! Then, forward this alert to friends and family who are also concerned with the federal takeover of education in Mississippi!

Please contact Senate Education Committee Chairman Gray Tollison and insist he bring the bills up for a vote by Tuesday. Then, contact Lt. Governor Tate Reeves to express your concerns with Common Core and that we expect these bills to be brought up for consideration. Mississippi Legislators are receiving a lot of pressure from the political elite, and we must demand that, at the very least, they represent their constituents by considering these bills.

Call first, then email below.

Senate Education Chairman Gray Tollison: (662) 234-7070

Lt. Governor Tate Reeves: (601) 359-3200

SB 2736 withdraws Mississippi from the Common Core and data collection systems; instructs that a committee will be created to write standards to be under Mississippi control.

SB 2632 pauses implementation of the Common Core for further review; stops the data collection systems; withdraws Mississippi from the testing consortium.

SB 2526 pauses implementation of the Standards for further evaluation and review.

We are writing to urge you to take action on Common Core this legislative session. Please bring up SB 2736, SB 2632, or SB 2526 in the Education Committee by the deadline on Tuesday, February 4th.
The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a big-government, top-down approach to education, and it is not good for students or the future of Mississippi.
The Common Core Standards are of poor quality and will fail to prepare our students for studies in science, technology, engineering, and math. By eighth grade, the standards put our students two years behind their peers in high-performing countries and even further behind in high school.
In English and language arts, the Common Core severely de-emphasizes the study of classic literature and instead implements drab and simplistic "informational" texts. We know that critical thinking is the key to success, and the evidence shows that children should be reading more, not less, classic literature.
Prominent child psychiatrists and psychologists have heavily criticized the Standards as being age-inappropriate for young children.
With costs expected to rise well above $100 million for states, Mississippi taxpayers cannot afford the Common Core!
We know that Mississippians cannot depend on the federal government to look out for the best interests of our children, so please act on behalf of our state by withdrawing from the Common Core, reclaiming state sovereignty, and returning power to Mississippians!
