Action Alert
Take Action Keep the Debate Going as Summer Recess Winds Down and your Representatives and Senators return to Washington, D.C.!
August 31, 2009
Over the past few weeks, you, along with thousands of your fellow American citizens, have done your civic duty and actively participated in and influenced the legislative process by attending the thousands of town hall meetings across the country.  Your patriotic opposition to the government-run health care proposal has successfully put the liberal majority and the Obama White House on the defensive, but they haven't retreated and surrendered yet!

We strongly urge you to continue questioning and pressuring your representatives not to give in on these FOUR key issues:
  • The "Co-Op Compromise" is a Cover-Up. Don't be duped by rumors that the unpopular "public option" will be scrapped from the bill.  A wide array of liberal Congressmen and Senators have publicly conceded that the supposed health insurance "co-op" compromise is just a fancy name for "government-run plan."  Here are a few good quotes to have on hand when questioning your representatives:
"We're going to have some type of public option, call it 'co-op', call it what you want.  — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), 7/10/09, Washington Post.
"The [co-op has] to be written in a way that accomplishes the objectives of a public option."  Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT), 6/12/09, Politico.
"It will have, coming out of the House, a public option. The only debate on that is what it will be called."  — Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), 7/13/09, Reuters.
    • Abortion Will Be Covered.  While being pressed about taxpayer-funded abortion coverage, a common excuse used frequently by proponents of ObamaCare is, "I support the Hyde Amendment which prohibits federal taxpayer funding of abortions."  This is an inaccurate statement, and Eagle Forum urges you to challenge your representatives on this falsehood.  The Hyde Amendment denies taxpayer funding for Medicaid abortions only, but it does allow taxpayer funding for abortions under the "exception" cases of rape, incest, and life of the mother.  The Hyde Amendment applies to programs funded through the annual Health & Human Services Appropriations bill only, so the Hyde Amendment's ban on taxpayer funding of abortion would not apply to this health care bill.
    • Illegal Aliens Will Be Covered.  Proof of citizenship is not required in order to apply for coverage under the "public option."  In the Senate bill, illegal aliens are exempted from the government mandates to purchase health insurance, which means that lawful Americans will have to pay a fine for not purchasing insurance, but illegals will be off the hook, and continue to reap health care treatment at taxpayers' expense.
  • Senate Passage via Budget Reconciliation.  Senate Majority Leader Reid (D-NV) must round up at least 60 votes in order to pass any bill subject to a filibuster.  However, because the outrage over this legislation is so great, so overwhelming, and so consistent, Reid can opt to change the rules of engagement, bypass the traditional 60 vote threshold for cloture and pass ObamaCare with a simple majority (51 votes) via the budget reconciliation process.  This would be a sneaky tactic to pass the main portions of the health care bill, such as Obama's public option, and then pass the other segments of the bill piece by piece during the remainder of the 111th Congress.
The August Recess is coming to a close and your elected officials will be returning to the nation's Capitol next week on Tuesday, September 8th, but that doesn't mean that the health care debate has to end, too!

Please continue to attend your local town hall meetings beyond the close of the August recess.  A steady stream of phone calls is still needed into your Representative's and Senators' district and state offices, as well as their Capitol Hill offices.  We need your help in calling the liberals out at every turn as they try to pass this bill through Congress any way they can!
