I am writing because I am concerned about a proposed constitutional amendment that would nullify the right of individuals and organization to participate in elections, in direct conflict with the First Amendment. Senate Joint Resolution 19 is an ill-conceived attempt to stifle the publication or broadcast of political speech. My conviction is that this is not what the Founding Fathers intended.
I am mindful of the potential of campaign money to influence elections, but am also aware of many instances in which the better-financed candidate lost. Money makes speech possible, and it simply shouldn’t be stifled in our democracy.
As a member of the Center for Moral Clarity, a non-partisan Christian grassroots advocacy organization, I urge you to reject Senate Joint Resolution 19. Thank you for considering my opinion.
