Good news, New York! Governor Cuomo signed Assemblymember Tom Abinanti’s A261 and State Senator Parker’s S3895 which will require the State of New York to determine how much the autism epidemic costs the State of New York. There are more than 3,000 new students with an autism diagnosis entering the school system every year, and the number of people with autism in the adult care system is expanding by 3,000 people per year as well. One study done by a large New York City service provider in 2008 estimated that the cost of an adult in a group home from age 21 till 65 was more than $14 million. Perhaps once the decisionmakers get a grasp on the cost of autism they might possibly become much more serious about doing something about it. Now we need to get the Governor to put some money in the budget so the agencies given this desperately need task will have the resources to do the work.
